Pastoral letter from the new Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols - click to read more

In the reading from the letter of St James, which we have just heard, the Apostle gives us a realistic picture of family and parish life. He describes our daily struggles, “these wars and battles between yourselves” (4.1), arising from conflicting ambitions and desires. He speaks of the wisdom “that comes down from above” (3.17) and the enduring kindness and compassion to which it gives rise, overcoming our temptations to
favouritism and hypocrisy.

This wisdom of which he speaks is, of course, Christ himself. So St James insists that our relationship with Christ, expressed in prayer, is central to the stability and fruitfulness of our lives. A sound practice of daily prayer is essential for our well-being.

Three people who illustrate this truth very clearly are being held before us in the weeks and months ahead.

The first is St Thérèse of Lisieux, well known as The Little Flower. She teaches us that prayer can indeed be part of our daily routine, knitted into the regular tasks of the day. Through her own prayer she came to understand that her vocation was to love.

She wrote in ‘The Story of a Soul’: “I had discovered where it is that I belong in the Church, the niche God has appointed for me. To be nothing else than love, deep down in the heart of Mother Church.” Her direct, wholehearted love of the Lord has meant that the hidden life of St Thérèse has become a gift to people all over the world. Everyone who seeks to know God in their own heart can draw inspiration from her example. True love such as hers is always creative.

The relics of St Thérèse – the tangible remains of her holy life – are coming to the Diocese during October. On Sunday 11th October, they will be in the Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Kensington Church Street. From 12th -15th October, the relics will be in Westminster Cathedral. Many people find that, in her presence, their faith is strengthened, their prayer is deepened and they turn to God afresh, through repentance and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I encourage you most earnestly to come to her in these two places during these few days. A plenary indulgence may be gained, in the presence of these relics, under the normal conditions of Reconciliation, Holy Communion and prayers for the Holy Father.

The second person being held before us at this time is Cardinal John Henry Newman. He is to be Beatified, most probably, in early summer 2010, the first English person to be recognised as a ‘Confessor of the Catholic Faith’ for over 600 years.

As you know, he came only gradually to the fullness of Catholic faith. It was a difficult journey for him. Yet, in his own words, he came to recognise our faith as “a working religion”, not concerned with ideas or vague generalities, but taking us up into the true worship of Christ himself. At the heart of Newman’s sense of the realism of our faith was the real presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, “as real”, he said “as we are real”.

For thirty years, John Henry Newman was a Catholic parish priest in Birmingham. When he died, in August 1890, over 20,000 people lined the streets for his funeral procession. They came to pay tribute to a fine and devoted parish priest. It is so providential that his Beatification will take place during this Year for Priests, established last June by Pope Benedict XVI....

During this Year for Priests, we are asked to pray for our priests in a special way, to thank and encourage them. The life of a priest has its own particular demands and we all know the crucial leadership given by the priest in the parish. So, I ask you, cherish your priests and care for them. Remember not only the sacrifice priests have made but also the gift of sacramental life they bring to you through their ministry and the pastoral care they give.

St Thérèse had a special love for priests. John Henry Newman was a great example of a faithful, hardworking priest. The third person in our sight at this time is St John Vianney, the famous Curé of Ars. He is the patron saint of priests. He too reminds us of the centrality of prayer and repentance in our lives, and of the astonishing gift we are given in the Real Presence of the Lord in our churches.

May these holy men and this holy woman pray for us. May these coming months bring blessings on our families and parishes. And from those sources of strength and encouragement, may we be renewed in our faith and in our generosity towards all in need.

Archbishop of Westminster

Very encouraging letter, nice thoughts about St Therese. I would love to read more about St John Vianney, patron Saint of all priests.

Vatican prepares vast reforms of the ways the Mass is celebrated - Catholic Herald reports - click to read

...The Vatican has proposed sweeping reforms to the way Mass is celebrated, it has been claimed.

Communion on the tongue, Consecration celebrated ad orientem (facing east) and renewed use of Latin could all be re-introduced to ordinary Sunday Masses as part of proposals put forward by the Congregation for Divine Worship.

Andrea Tornielli, a senior Vatican watcher, reported last week that the congregation's cardinals and bishops voted "almost unanimously in favour of greater sacrality of the Rite" at a plenary meeting in March.

Members of the congregation are said to have put forward 30 propositiones ("propositions") aimed at reforming the way in which the Novus Ordo has been celebrated since the Second Vatican Council.

These set out to recover a "sense of Eucharistic worship", the use of the "Latin language in the celebration" and include the "remaking of the introductory parts of the Missal in order to put a stop to liturgical abuses".

According to Mr Tornielli the propositions, which were voted on by the congregation on March 21, also include placing renewed emphasis on receiving Communion on the tongue "according to the norms"....

Efficatious Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus starts on 10th of June - click to read the prayer

"We can contemplate and honour the Heart of the divine Redeemer as a symbolic image of His love and a witness of our redemption and, at the same time, as a sort of mystical ladder by which we mount to the embrace of God our Saviour" - Pope Pius XII

The LifeSiteNews reports attempts to make amendments to the Euthanasia Bill in the UK Parliament:... "Lord Falconer of Thoroton has tabled an amendment to the Coroners and Justice Bill that would make it legal to assist a person to leave the country to commit suicide. Presently, it is illegal for someone to assist another to commit suicide, even if done out of the country. The law, however, is generally not enforced because it “is not in the public interest,” according to Sir Ken Macdonald, former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Numerous U.K. residents have in recent years travelled to Switzerland, where assisted suicide is legal, to commit suicide with the help of the suicide group Dignitas. While a number of investigations have been initiated against relatives who have travelled with the person who was committing suicide, none have resulted in charges being laid.

Lord Alton of Liverpool, however, said that the bill “marks the beginning of the creation of a death cult. It is not the terminally-ill but the perfectly healthy we are talking about,” referencing the fact that Dignitas is willing to assist the suicide even of those who are merely depressed and not suffering any physical illness.

Falconer, on the other hand, argued that some people, fearing the unenforced law, leave the country to commit suicide “alone.” “They go early. And they die in the hands of strangers.” He claimed that the current law “only works because of the good sense of the DPP [not to prosecute offenders].”

“The amendment I am tabling to the Coroners and Justice Bill does not make it an easier for people to go to Switzerland to die in a Dignitas clinic,” he said, “they can already do this. Rather, it is making sure that the law reflects the sensible position adopted to date by the courts and the DPP, while protecting people from abuse.”....

Please offer your Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in reparation for the sin of promoting horrific culture of death.

Clandestine 'ordinations' of four 'Catholic' women-bishops in California - click to read

I am posting this sad news thinking about Archp Lefebvre's excommunication for ordaining four Bishops without Papal approval over twenty years ago, whereas clandestine ordinations of women priests in the Catholic Church are still taking place. Pope Benedict issued statement last year declaring automatic excommunication for women priests and for Bishops ordaining them. This has not been taken seriously enough by those involved in the scandal.

This humorous picture referring to the scandal was posted on the Angelqueen forum. It maybe entitled "Tea party after".
One can watch this misery on YouTube

From EWTN library Ban on women priests infallible Those who are involved in women-priests ordinations or propagate this idea are NOT CATHOLIC. Our Lord called twelve MEN for His Apostles and no women, very clear message.

LifeNews - Catholic Bishop thinks Christ died on the Cross out of solidarity with men not to redeem us - click to read

Please, send complain on the addresses provided on the link. It is shameful and very sad the 'Catholic' Bishop publicly declares heresy. We need to protest - address and phone numbers of relevant Vatican congregations available with the linked news.

What exactly has been said (text in German and English ) during the interview on German National TV:

"Journalist: Also Sie würden est nicht mehr so formulieren, dass Gott quasi seinen eigenen Sohn hingegeben hat, weil wir Menschen so sündig waren, so wurden Sie es nicht mehr formulieren?

(So you would no longer phrase it so: that God offered his own Son because we men were so sinful, you wouldn't phrase it that way any longer?)

Bishop: Nein. Er hat seinen eigenen Sohn in Solidarität mit uns bis in diese letze Todesnot hineingelassen um zu zeigen: Soviel seid ihr mir wert. Ich geh mit euch. Ich bin ganz bei euch in jeder Situation.

(No. He sent his own son in solidarity with us into the last anguish of death to show us: I value you this much. I accompany you. I am completely with you in every situation.)

This is pure heresy against traditional catholic doctrine, even if some commentators don't like to listen such thing!

But Damian Thompson from the 'Daily Telegraph' Holy Smoke blog thinks Gordon Brown plan to amend anti-Catholic Act of Settlement issued in 1701 is a mere attmept to neuter Catholics. He writes: ..."Here are a few subjects that are of major concern to Catholics: compulsory sex education for five-year-olds, the creation of hybrid embryos, the placing of children with gay couples, the attack on the selection procedures of Catholic schools. These are areas in which Mr Brown wishes Catholics would just shut up."

Is the mandatory ad orientem worship coming back? - read the Cardinal Pell interview's comments

...."I think I would be in favour of it (ad orientem worship) because it makes it patently clear that the priest is not the centre of the show, that this an act of worship of the one true God, and the people are joining with the priest for that.”....

Cardinal Pell on President Obama:
..."[H]is record on life issues is very, very bad indeed. I'm still hoping against hope that he won't do the worst, that he won't bring in that Freedom of Choice Act. I wish him well, because so much rides on his decisions. But he's got a very slight curriculum vitae to be a president of the United States. He ran a brilliant campaign. I think he's an outstanding public orator. We've yet to see him really do anything that has significantly changed the situation for the better. But it's very early days yet. And he has inherited an appalling financial situation."...
